Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at kathrynbrowntherapy@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Therapy With Kathryn offers a variety of counseling services including individual therapy, couples therapy, and family therapy. I also offer Ecotherapy and EMDR Therapy in addition to traditional talk therapy. My expertise focuses around trauma, anxiety, pre-marital and marital.

During your first session with Kathryn, she will cover legal and ethical components to therapy. I will ask you questions to get to know you better and understand what brings you to counseling. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the counseling process.

A standard counseling session with Kathryn is 50 minutes, although upon request I do offer longer sessions depending on your specific needs and preferences.

It is recommended weekly to biweekly for consistent care. We can collaborate together to decide what may be  the best option for you.

Therapy With Kathryn is now paneled with Aetna through Alma. If you have Aetna insurance, you may be eligible for in-network coverage depending on your specific plan and benefits. I recommend completing an insurance verification and eligibility check prior to your first session to better understand coverage, copays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs. For clients who are out-of-network or whose insurance does not cover services, I can provide a Superbill to support potential insurance reimbursement. Please understand that submitting a Superbill does not guarantee coverage or reimbursement, and outcomes vary based on individual insurance plans. It is recommended to contact your insurance company directly prior to your initial session to discuss coverage, reimbursement options, and any questions regarding your benefits.

Therapy With Kathryn is not available after hours. If you are having a counseling emergency, call 911, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988, and or go to the nearest emergency room.

Each session is $180 per 50 minute session.

I believe a good fit is crucial to the therapeutic process. If for some reason it is not, I would happily provide referrals and resources for you in your mental health journey.

Kathryn has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Vanguard University and a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Azusa Pacific University. She is trained in Prepare/Enrich for premarital and marital couples, EMDR for trauma and anxiety, and holds a certificate in Perinatal Mood Disorders from Postpartum Support International (PSI), as well as additional training in Birth Trauma from Krysta Dancy. She is a Certified Brainspotting Practitioner and a Certified EMDR Therapist, and is also an EMDRIA Consultant in Training.

Therapy With Kathryn require's a 24 hours notice for all cancellations. This allows me to accommodate other clients who may be in need of a session. Should a cancellation occur without prior notice, a charge of a full session will be applied.

THIS NOTICE DESCRIBES HOW HEALTH INFORMATION ABOUT YOU MAY BE USED AND DISCLOSED AND HOW YOU CAN GET ACCESS TO THIS INFORMATION. PLEASE REVIEW IT CAREFULLY.

I. MY PLEDGE REGARDING HEALTH INFORMATION

I understand that health information about you and your mental health care is personal. I am committed to protecting your protected health information ("PHI").

I create a record of the care and services you receive from me. This record is necessary to provide quality care and comply with legal requirements.

I am required by law to:

  • Maintain the privacy and security of your PHI.
  • Provide you with this Notice explaining my privacy practices and legal responsibilities.
  • Follow the terms of the Notice currently in effect.
  • Notify you if a breach of unsecured PHI occurs when required by law.

I comply with applicable federal and California privacy laws, including HIPAA, the California Confidentiality of Medical Information Act (CMIA), and applicable California mental health confidentiality laws.

I may change the terms of this Notice. Any changes will apply to the PHI I maintain. Updated notices will be available upon request and on my website.

II. HOW I MAY USE AND DISCLOSE HEALTH INFORMATION ABOUT YOU

The following categories describe different ways I may use and disclose your PHI.

A. Treatment, Payment, and Health Care Operations

I may use and disclose your PHI without your written authorization for treatment, payment, and health care operations, as permitted by law.

  • Treatment: I may use or disclose your information to provide, coordinate, or manage your mental health care, including consultation with other health care providers when permitted by law.
  • Payment: I may disclose relevant information to your insurance company to verify benefits, obtain authorization, submit claims, and receive payment for services.
  • Health Care Operations: I may use your information for practice administration, quality improvement, legal consultation, and other activities necessary to operate my practice.

B. Lawsuits and Disputes

I may disclose your PHI in response to a valid court order or other lawful process when permitted or required by law. I will review applicable legal requirements and confidentiality protections before releasing mental health information.

III. CERTAIN USES AND DISCLOSURES REQUIRE YOUR AUTHORIZATION

Except for the uses and disclosures described in this Notice or otherwise permitted or required by law, I will obtain your written authorization before using or disclosing your PHI.

Psychotherapy Notes: I do not maintain separate "psychotherapy notes" as defined by HIPAA under 45 CFR § 164.501. I maintain a clinical record of your treatment, which may include assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, and progress notes. You may request access to or copies of your clinical record, subject to applicable law.

Marketing: I will not use or disclose your PHI for marketing purposes without your authorization when required by law.

Sale of PHI: I will not sell your PHI in the regular course of my business.

You may revoke a written authorization at any time by submitting a written request. Revocation will not affect disclosures already made in reliance on your authorization.

  • For judicial and administrative proceedings when permitted or required by law.
  • For certain law enforcement purposes when permitted by law.
  • To coroners or medical examiners when required for duties authorized by law.
  • For research purposes when applicable privacy requirements are satisfied.
  • For certain specialized government functions when permitted by law.
  • For workers' compensation purposes as required by law.
  • To contact you with appointment reminders, scheduling information, treatment alternatives, or other health-related services.

California Confidentiality Protections: Your mental health information is also protected under California law, including the Confidentiality of Medical Information Act and applicable psychotherapist-patient confidentiality and privilege laws. I will disclose your information only as authorized by you or as permitted or required by applicable law.

V. CERTAIN DISCLOSURES REQUIRE YOU TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO OBJECT

Disclosures to Family, Friends, or Others: I may share relevant PHI with a family member, friend, or other person you identify as being involved in your care or payment for your care, unless you object, as permitted by law. In an emergency, I may use professional judgment when obtaining your agreement is not practical.

VI. YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING RIGHTS WITH RESPECT TO YOUR PHI

1. Right to Request Restrictions: You may request limits on how I use or disclose your PHI for treatment, payment, or health care operations. I am not required to agree to every request. However, I must honor qualifying requests not to disclose information about services you paid for entirely out of pocket to your health plan, subject to applicable law.

2. Right to Confidential Communications: You may request that I contact you in a specific way or at a particular address or phone number. I will accommodate reasonable requests.

5. Right to an Accounting of Disclosures: You may request a list of certain disclosures of your PHI made during the previous six years. Some disclosures, including those for treatment, payment, and health care operations, are excluded. I will generally respond within 60 days.
